第三期高级商务英语写作班

  GENERAL OBJECTIVES
To enable learners to develop adequate writing skills for the purposes of writing letters, reports and proposals of paraphrasing and summarizing information from sources; and producing various documents as required at professional and business levels.

SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES
· To distinguish between spoken genres and written texts and different written styles;
· To recognize the purpose, structure and stages of styles of writing required from professionals;
· To identify the typical features of a variety of requirements for report writing in the business world;
· To develop awareness of critical thinking, analysis and evaluation throughout the writing process;
· To develop skills of paraphrasing, summarizing and synthesizing information during the writing process;
· To develop skills of reporting and quoting according to accepted international conventions;
· To develop control of textual cohesion and coherence; to acquire a better understanding of grammatical features;
· To introduce the concept of plagiarism and techniques for avoiding it;
· To review basic functions such as definitions, classification, cause/effect relationships, comparison and contrast; to learn how to develop arguments, comments, critiques, questions, suggestions and descriptions;
· To become familiar with international conventions of research, referencing and bibliography;
· To produce appropriate texts by modeling on authentic texts;
· To plan, draft and revise; to produce acceptable layouts (report presentation).

Week 2
- The features of report writing
- How to be concise
- Research and reading strategies
- Editing, plagiarism

Week 3
- To practice how to write definitions
- How should ideas be classified and organized
- Structure within sentences and paragraphs
- Business words and their context

Week 4
- Referencing (how to use sources)
- How to deal with unknown words
- Analyzing the written task
- Using the past and present tenses in reported speech

Week 5
- How to persuade (how to be analytical; how to develop an argument);
- Structuring a report
- Giving advice or an opinion
- Formulating questions or requests for information
- Business letters

Week 6
- How to summarize information
- Preparing a plan
- How to write an introduction
- Using the Web and the Internet for writing purposes

Week 7
- Different ways of acknowledging sources;
- Review: general structure
- Review: Referencing guidelines
- Writing for meetings

Week 8
- How to introduce and discuss data
- How to collect relevant information
How to evaluate and use information
- How to paraphrase information

Week 9
- Writing comparisons and contrasts
- How to write and highlight the main points
- How to write a conclusion

Week 10
- Writing skills (terminology, grammar)
- Different ways of acknowledging sources and evidence used
- How to use different reporting structures
- Review of referencing guidelines

Week 11
- How to integrate illustrations, charts, graphs and tables;
- Writing critiques and comments
- How to describe a process
- How to write cause/effect texts

Week 12
- Review: Understanding what a report is
- Checking your writing
- Additional business terms
